The Many Faces of Anakin

At almost three years old, Anakin spends his days surrounded by his favorite people: his human parents, his four human brothers (whose girlfriends he charmingly wins over during visits), and a few extended family members like Mom, April, and Savannah. While he’ll occasionally entertain visitors and friends, Anakin likes to keep his circle small and familiar—a reflection of his personality and the lessons we’ve learned about his anxiety. For him, familiarity and routine bring comfort.
One of Anakin’s greatest joys is sunbathing in the backyard. While his canine siblings often try to entice him into play, he’s happiest lying in the grass, gazing up at the towering trees that frame the cul-de-sac. He could watch them for hours, and I often find myself wondering: what’s going through his mind?
Do the trees remind him of the 29 harrowing days he spent lost, searching for familiar faces and scents? Of the cold, rainy 35-degree nights when finding shelter was a matter of survival? Do they bring back memories of those dark, lonely nights when he curled up with a growling belly, having gone days without food?
I’ll never know, but one thing is certain—when Anakin is outside, he moves differently. He takes his time, soaking in every sound and smell, as if savoring his safety and freedom. He doesn’t rush back inside, and I never make him.
These days, Anakin stays close to home, rarely venturing beyond the familiar comfort of the neighborhood. He’s perfectly content with that, and so am I. His anxiety may have been underestimated in the past, but I’ve made it my mission to ensure that the rest of his years are filled with peace, love, and security.
One day, Anakin will be gone, but the legacy he’s left behind is immeasurable. He’s more than just a dog; he’s a reminder of resilience, love, and the bond that grows from overcoming life’s hardest moments together. 🐾❤️
