Stray Mama Dogs & Their Puppies: What We’ve Learned

One of the most common questions we get at Anakin’s Trails is, “What have you learned about stray dogs?” But an even bigger question comes up time and time again:

“What do you do when a stray dog is nursing?”

Recovering a mother dog with her litter is one of the most delicate, challenging rescues we handle. Since Anakin’s Trails began, we have successfully retrieved five litters, and each case has reinforced the patience, strategy, and dedication it takes to safely rescue both mom and pups.

Unlike lost pets, a stray mama dog isn’t just looking out for herself—she’s protecting tiny, vulnerable lives. This means she will behave much differently than a dog simply trying to survive on her own. Below is what we’ve learned from experience, and what we hope to educate others on when encountering a stray mother dog.

🐕 You See a Stray Mama Dog That Looks Like She’s Nursing… Now What? 🐕

🐾 Never remove a mother dog from an area without confirming the location of her puppies. Many people think if they can catch the mama, they can simply go back and “find” the puppies later. This is a dangerous mistake. If the puppies are left behind, they will likely die without her. A mother dog will rarely lead you to her puppies—especially if she does not trust you—so leaving her in the area is critical until her den is located.

🐾 Immediately put out food in a safe, accessible area. A nursing mother will roam to find food, and this is often when she is at her most vulnerable—crossing roads, encountering predators, and exhausting herself. If she has puppies, she will return to eat several times a day, usually 4-6 times within 24 hours. If you have access to a camera, setting it up over the food station can help track her movements and confirm if she is actively nursing.

🐾 Watch for missing bowls and disappearing food. Unlike stray dogs who eat at the food station, a mother dog feeding her pups will often carry food and even the bowl back to her den. If you notice food disappearing rapidly or bowls going missing, it’s a strong indication that she is providing for puppies nearby.

🐾 Use a thermal drone (if available) to locate the den. A mother dog is incredibly skilled at keeping her puppies hidden. One of the most effective ways to track a nursing mother back to her den is by using a thermal-only drone. When she finishes eating, the drone can follow her back to where she is sheltering her puppies—often in thick brush, downed trees, or abandoned structures.

🐾 When food is scarce, a mother dog will bring roadkill to her puppies. Once the puppies are old enough to wean (around 5-6 weeks), the mother will continue to provide for them even if food is not readily available. In the wild, this often means collecting roadkill or scavenging for discarded food.

🐾 Den construction is key to survival. Pregnant stray dogs instinctively prepare dens that will serve as their home for at least six weeks. These dens are usually built in:✔️ Brush piles or fallen trees✔️ Surrounded by briars (for predator protection)✔️ Multiple exits and pathways (to escape danger)✔️ Hidden trails leading in and out

🐾 Puppies are trained to stay within a perimeter. One of the biggest challenges in rescuing a litter is that the puppies are trained not to leave the den. At around 4-6 weeks old, the mother teaches them to stay put when she leaves to find food. This means even if you’ve searched and don’t see them, they are likely there—just instinctively hidden.

🐾 Puppies over 5 weeks old will likely be feral. Even if the mother dog is friendly, her puppies may not be. If they have never encountered humans before, they will consider them predators. This means they will need to be trapped rather than simply picked up. The older the puppies are, the harder this process becomes.

Every Mama Dog Rescue is Different, But One Rule Always Applies:

Patience.

Rushing to capture a stray mama can have devastating consequences. By observing, tracking, and strategically planning each step, we increase the chances of safely recovering both mother and puppies.
