Last weekend’s ice, snow, and sleet created dangerous conditions not only for people, but for countless stray dogs and cats trying to survive outside. Even after the storm passed, many animals were still wandering without food, water, or shelter.
One concerned family reached out to Anakin’s Trails asking for help with a stray dog who had been roaming their very active neighborhood. Neighbors had been feeding him and trying to safely capture him, but he wouldn’t allow anyone to get close.
The entire community came together, determined to help.
Two local heroes, Alex and her mom, stepped up and promised that if the dog could be safely trapped, they would take him in and give him a loving home
.
Team member Sharon coordinated the logistics and helped set up a plan, including where to place food stations and when to attempt trapping. Before long, the speckle-nosed, middle-aged pup—now known as Scout—was ready for his chance at safety.
Team members Starr and Beth picked up the only available humane trap and headed out into the cold evening. For Starr, this was her first real trapping experience.
Scout was shy and kept his distance, but he loved watching other dogs and seemed drawn to them. As Beth and Starr were finishing the setup, Scout appeared and began eyeing the bait. Knowing darkness was coming soon, they added one last tempting treat to the trap.
It worked.
Scout went in, the door closed, and he was safely secured.
At first, Scout was scared. But with gentle voices, warm hugs, and lots of love, he quickly began to calm down. A video call was made to the family’s college-age daughter, and there were happy tears all around knowing Scout would never have to spend another freezing night alone.
No more wandering. No more watching from a distance.
Scout is now part of a family and part of a community.
At Anakin’s Trails, we are not a rescue. We are a stray and pet recovery organization that helps animals be located, trapped, or recovered so pets can be reunited with their families and strays can find a new forever home.
Welcome home, Scout. ❤️🐾
