When a dog goes missing, the fear can feel overwhelming. Add in the fact that the dog was lost while under professional care, and that fear can quickly turn into anger too. That’s exactly what happened to Mack and his family.
Mack escaped from a boarding facility, and his owner, Melinda, reached out to Anakin’s Trails for help. From the very first call, we worked together to create a plan to bring Mack home.
Melinda shared photos of Mack on social media and began receiving a few sightings, but she wasn’t sure what to do next. We explained something called lost dog syndrome—a common behavior pattern where frightened dogs stay on the move, avoid people (even their own family), and rely heavily on scent.
We started by setting up feeding stations and trail cameras in areas where Mack had been seen. Melinda also placed familiar-smelling items like dirty clothes, Mack’s favorite bed, and his food near those stations. Even though Mack never appeared on camera, Melinda kept going.
She put up flyers throughout the area, all while juggling work, family, and other pets. Every time a new sighting came in, she followed instructions to move the feeding station and camera closer to where Mack was last seen.
Eventually, multiple sightings began coming from the same neighborhood. This told us that Mack was staying within a smaller area. At that point, we asked Melinda to bring one or two of her other dogs and spread their scent by driving slowly with windows down and walking the area. Instead of calling for Mack, we encouraged her to sit on the ground and interact with the dogs, allowing curiosity and familiar smells to draw Mack in naturally.
Melinda mentioned that Mack always responded to a special whistle her husband used. We encouraged him to try that as well.
Not long after, Melinda’s husband returned to an area where Mack had been reported. He stopped his car, stepped out, and used the special whistle. Mack stopped, turned around, and ran straight to him. Mack jumped into his arms, finally safe.
Melinda and her husband stayed focused, patient, and committed—even when emotions ran high. Their determination, combined with following proven recovery steps, led to a happy reunion. Mack is now warm, safe, and back where he belongs—home with his family.
At Anakin’s Trails, we don’t rescue animals. We help locate, trap, and recover animals so pets can be reunited with their family and strays can find a new forever home.
Mack’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right guidance, patience, and persistence, there is always hope.
Welcome home, Mack. ❤️🐾
