Word spread quickly when a blue heeler stray was spotted living at a mulch facility in Spartanburg, located near a busy highway. Many people were concerned about her safety, especially with traffic nearby and colder weather moving in.

Kind locals brought food and water and tried to help her, but blue heelers are smart, fast, and cautious. It soon became clear that the only safe way to help her would be through trapping.

Heather, a local volunteer with Carolina Loving Hound, reached out to Anakin’s Trails for assistance. Someone caring for Lucy even placed a box filled with blankets near the steps where she hid, giving her shelter from the cold wind.

Volunteer Sharon arrived to quietly set up a feeding station and camera at the facility. Within minutes, Lucy appeared, drawn in by the smell of food. Throughout the night and into the next morning, caring community members continued to make sure she was fed and watched over.

The following day, the team returned to set up the trap. Lucy watched closely from her shelter as panels were placed nearby, but she stayed calm and curious. That afternoon, volunteers waited nearby, carefully watching the trap.

As the wind picked up and the sky darkened, Lucy approached the trap—and walked right in.

When the team reached her, it was clear she was in pain from an ear infection. A local immediately brought ear drops to help keep her comfortable until she could be seen by a veterinarian.

Soon after, Lucy was loaded up and placed on a soft bed inside a warm vehicle. For the first time, she was safe and out of the cold—not tucked inside a box, but surrounded by care.

Anakin’s Trails is not a rescue organization. We are a stray and pet recovery organization. We help locate, trap, and recover animals so lost pets can be reunited with their families and strays can find a new, forever home.

No more sleeping under porches or in boxes, Lucy. You’re warm and safe tonight. ❤️
