The journey of Leia, the beautiful White Swiss Shepherd, began in July 2024 on Racetrack Road and led her to the Vermiculite plant on Highway 101 in Woodruff. Seemingly a recent mother, her raw teats grazed the ground as she slowly roamed the asphalt parking lot. Her story touched the hearts of many, and a community-wide effort began to bring her to safety.

Despite countless attempts, Leia proved to be too clever for anyone to capture—not even Animal Control’s traps could outsmart her. In the meantime, she became a beloved figure in the area, with locals forming a “fan club” to ensure she never went hungry. From cheeseburgers to meatloaf dinners, Leia knew exactly where to stay for the best meals. Among her many admirers was a man named Michael, who earned her trust like no one else. He became the key to her rescue, the “bait” she needed to feel safe.

But with winter approaching and storms on the horizon, Leia’s double-layered fur wasn’t enough to keep her warm. Her survival instincts were sharp—she chose the openness of the plant for its visibility and security—but she lacked the one thing she truly needed: a family to call her own.

After six months on the run, Leia’s story took a hopeful turn when an organization based nearby reached out. This group, specializing in training German Shepherds as emotional support dogs for veterans, saw the potential in Leia. They recognized her resilience, intelligence, and calm demeanor as the perfect traits for a life of service and love.

Leia’s days of wandering highways, enduring harsh weather, and surviving on scraps were finally over. No more waiting in the cold and rain for the next meal tossed out a car window. Leia now has a purpose and a new chapter ahead—bringing comfort and healing to those who have served our country.
