Ebony And Ivory Are Safe - Rescued 12/15/25

Dogs often find comfort in numbers. Even the most unlikely group of dogs can form a bond when they are living on their own, depending on each other for companionship, warmth, and protection.

Earlier this week, a small group of three stray dogs was spotted near Woodruff Road. The group included a large black Lab and two tiny dogs who weighed only about four to five pounds each. Sadly, the worst happened. The black Lab was struck by a vehicle sometime Sunday afternoon. With that news, the situation became urgent.

Anakin’s Trails volunteers, along with caring local residents who had been feeding the dogs, came together quickly to try to help the two remaining pups. The area they were traveling through was extremely busy, and the danger of them being hit by a car was very real.

While some team members worked to keep Ebony and Ivory from crossing the road, others prepared a trap at a nearby home where the dogs were known to eat. Time was critical. Night was approaching, and temperatures were expected to drop into the teens with dangerous wind chills. With their small size, the puppies would not have survived the night outdoors.

As the sun began to set, the two dogs finally appeared. Everyone held their breath as Ivory cautiously went into the trap. After a few moments, Ebony followed. The trap door closed, and just like that, two little lives were safe.

Though frightened at first, Ivory quickly calmed when held, resting quietly against a volunteer’s chest as if she understood she was finally safe.

Ebony and Ivory were transported to Small But Mighty Rescue, where they will receive care, warmth, and the chance at loving homes.

We also pause to remember the black Lab who did not survive. He mattered. He was loved by the two small dogs who stayed by his side, and his loss is deeply felt.
