Chumley Is Safe

Some dogs survive being abandoned. Others don’t. Chumley is one of the lucky ones—and today, he is safe.

Anakin’s Trails was contacted about a severely underweight dog seen roaming near a busy area in Woodruff, South Carolina. With Interstate 26 nearby, time was critical. The goal was to figure out where Chumley traveled most so food could be placed and he could begin to settle in one area.

Our team began working sightings, setting traps, and placing food stations. For days, there were no confirmed sightings. Then a photo surfaced on social media. It was Chumley—but he looked even worse. He was barely moving and clearly very sick.

Food stations were placed near his last known location. Volunteers walked trails in extreme heat, hoping they were not too late. Through donated services, a drone company helped rule out areas so the search could focus where it mattered most.

Late one night, Chumley finally found the food station. He returned more than once, showing he was hungry and beginning to trust that food would be there.

At daylight, volunteer Wendi spotted him watching over the food station. With calm guidance from our team, she slowly approached him without pressure or sudden movement. After a careful and patient moment, she was able to slip a lead over his neck.

Chumley was secured.

He was covered in fleas, extremely thin, and suffering from anemia, but once he realized he was safe, he allowed himself to be helped. He was taken to be cleaned up and then transferred to Stone Soup Animal Rescue, where he will receive the medical care he desperately needs.

At Anakin’s Trails, we are not a rescue. We are a stray and pet recovery organization that helps locate, trap, and recover lost pets and stray animals so they can be reunited with their families or find their forever home.

Chumley no longer has to search for his next meal. His road to healing has begun—and because of teamwork and compassion, he now has a future filled with care and hope. 🐾❤️
