At Anakin’s Trails, we see a lot of heartbreaking cases, but Buddy the Shepherd’s story is one that truly highlights both the cruelty and kindness that exist in the world. Found in Chesnee, SC, his collar was so embedded into his neck that it was leaking blood and infection—a painful and horrifying sight. But thanks to the overwhelming support of the community, dedicated rescuers, and compassionate donors, Buddy is now on his way to the care he desperately needs.
A Desperate Plea for Help
When we were first contacted about Buddy, the situation was clear—he needed urgent medical attention. This poor German Shepherd had likely been abandoned or lost, left to roam the streets with a collar so tight it was cutting into his flesh. His neck was infected, and his wounds were draining, but despite his pain, he remained wary of human contact.
Since Buddy wasn’t approachable, the only way to help him was through humane trapping—but there was one major obstacle: we needed a rescue or foster to step up before we could proceed.
This is one of the most difficult realities of animal rescue. While our team is skilled at trapping, we are not a rescue in the traditional sense. We do not have the capacity to house every dog we trap, so before we commit to trapping, we must secure a safe place for the animal to go.
The Power of Community
As word spread about Buddy’s condition, the rescue community came together.
Pledges started rolling in to help cover his vet care.
Rescues and fosters stepped up to offer help.
People in the area volunteered to assist with baiting, monitoring the trap, and transport.
It was a true team effort. The support was overwhelming, proving once again that when people work together, lives can be saved.
The Challenges of Trapping
Trapping a severely injured, skittish dog like Buddy is never easy. We launched the trap on February 7th, and within hours, he was already coming to the food station. This was a good sign—he was hungry, which meant we had a solid chance at securing him.
However, our work was made more difficult by negativity and misinformation. Some people questioned our policies, arguing that we should trap him first and figure out placement later. But as we’ve stated before:
✔️ We must have a committed rescue or foster before trapping a dog. Otherwise, we risk creating a situation where the dog has nowhere to go.
✔️ Rescue work requires teamwork. While our team handles the trapping, we rely on local volunteers to help monitor and retrieve the dogs.
✔️ We do not take donations for these cases. Pledges go directly to the rescue or foster who takes the dog in and covers their medical expenses.
Despite the challenges, our supporters stayed focused on what truly mattered—saving Buddy.
Trapped and Safe at Last!
Late that night, after days of planning and dedication, Buddy walked into the trap. The relief was immediate—he was finally safe. No more suffering alone, no more pain with every movement. His journey toward healing had begun.
As of now, Buddy is under the care of Gracie Acres Dog Rescue, where he will receive the veterinary care, love, and attention he deserves. His wounds will be treated, and for the first time in what may be a very long time, he will know what it means to be truly cared for.
