Before the holidays, Anakin’s Trails began receiving many urgent requests for help. One of those calls involved an older Chow mix named Bessie who had come from a large hoarding situation.
Bessie had already been through a lot. She was scared, newly spayed, and dealing with a painful eye condition called entropion. After escaping from a fenced area, she spent four days roaming near abandoned buildings in Spartanburg County. Because of her age and medical needs, her situation was considered high risk.
Catrina from Chow Charmer Rescue contacted Anakin’s Trails and connected our team with Christie, an officer from Spartanburg Animal Control. Together, a plan was quickly put in place to help Bessie.
Since Bessie was small and weighed around 50 pounds, the team decided to try a box trap. The first step was setting up a feeding station to encourage her to return to the area. Volunteers placed food and a camera near an abandoned house where she had last been seen.
Cold rain and low temperatures made things difficult, and for more than a day Bessie did not appear. Then, early one morning, she finally showed up on camera.
Volunteers Sharon and Mike brought a trap to the location, baited it, and carefully set it. After a few hours, Bessie walked into the trap and was safely secured.
Soon afterward, Spartanburg Animal Control picked her up and transported her to rescue.
Anakin’s Trails is a stray and pet recovery organization. We help locate, trap, and recover animals so pets can be reunited with their families and strays can find a new, forever home.
No more roaming alone, Bessie. You’re safe now. ❤️ 🐾
