Some dogs struggle more than others when they find themselves lost and alone. Dogs that are used to living with people often don’t know how to survive on their own, and fear can take over quickly.
That was the case for Bernard.
Bernard, a doodle-type dog, had been seen running in the backwoods of Laurens County since November. At one point, there were reportedly three dogs dumped in the area. What happened to the other two is unknown, but Bernard was the one who managed to survive.
He traveled miles through rural land, facing hunger, cold, and predators.
Concerned community members began trying to help. Tabitha reached out to Anakin’s Trails after noticing Bernard eating at Jackie’s house. A plan was forming for him to eventually travel to Tennessee, where a family was ready to give him a safe home.
Team members Beth and Joyce set up a humane food station and camera to learn Bernard’s patterns. For several days, he didn’t appear. Just as the team was considering moving equipment, Bernard finally showed up and ate—then returned two more times that same day.
That gave the team hope.
Multiple evenings were spent setting the trap and waiting, but Bernard kept narrowly missing the timing. Each night ended with more determination to try again.
Finally, one afternoon, team members Sharon and Beth set the trap earlier than usual. As the sun began to set, Bernard came in for his usual meal.
This time, he walked into the humane trap.
Bernard was safe.
Almost immediately, Bernard showed how much he wanted human affection. He leaned into cuddles, accepted kisses, and made it clear he was ready to be a loved pet again.
Tabitha kept Bernard overnight, and the next day he traveled to Tennessee to begin his new life with a family who adores him. He even wore a sweater for the first time.
At Anakin’s Trails, we are not a rescue. We are a stray and pet recovery organization that helps animals to be located, trapped, or recovered so pets can be reunited with their families and strays can find a new forever home.
No more running through the woods, Bernard. You’re safe, loved, and home. 🐾❤️
