✔️ WE GOT ANNIE THE ORPHAN! ✔️

Annie’s story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and ultimately, hope. Found abandoned near the lakeside shore of FairPlay, South Carolina, Annie—a strikingly elegant Great Dane—was left to fend for herself after being separated from her male companion. Her journey to safety is a reminder of the challenges faced by dumped pets and the strength of the rescue community that works tirelessly to give them a better life.

Originally bred in Germany over 400 years ago, Great Danes are known for their strength, grace, and loyal companionship. Annie embodies all of these traits, but when we first encountered her, she was lost and confused, pacing the rainy road near the lake. Animal control had managed to catch her male companion just a day before, leaving Annie alone and desperately searching for her mate.

Lisa and I arrived on a rainy Saturday to set up a trap, knowing time was critical for this hungry, scared dog. Annie’s skinny physique told the story of days spent without proper food, and we baited the trap with the hope that hunger would draw her in. She approached the trap but didn’t go inside, so we adjusted it to a “dead trap,” making it as welcoming as possible with a cot and fresh food.

And wouldn’t you know it—after we left, Annie walked right in, drawn by the promise of comfort and safety. Throughout the evening and into the early morning, she made herself at home inside the trap, enjoying multiple meals. It was clear she was ready to be rescued.

The next morning, Lisa, Sharon, and Beth returned to finalize the plan. After some quick trap repairs, we were ready. But Annie, perhaps sensing the change, stayed away for a few hours. That’s when we turned to the person who had been feeding her and asked them to act as though they were simply delivering another meal. It was a long shot, but Annie’s trust in her feeder was exactly what we needed.

Sure enough, the moment Annie saw the familiar face, she walked into the trap without hesitation. At last, she was safe!

Annie’s next stop was Carolina Loving Hound Rescue, where she’ll begin a new chapter in her life. For the first time, she’ll sleep in a warm bed, surrounded by care and love.

But Annie’s story isn’t over just yet. Her heart still aches for her male companion, who was adopted shortly after being taken in by animal control. If you or someone you know adopted the male Great Dane from Anderson County PAWS, we would love to arrange for them to see each other one more time.

Annie misses him dearly, and we know it would mean the world to her.

No more wading in the cold water or pacing the lakeside, Annie. You’ve been rescued, and a brighter future is ahead. 💙🐾
